Development of new laboratory space in the HSSR / Hellenic Research and Development Centre (PE1)
FP1 concerns the development of the laboratory infrastructure of the Hellenic Space Research Centre through the supply and installation of materials and the execution of the necessary works for:
– The reconstruction of the existing elevated internal spaces (lofts), with a total area of 67 m^2, in the eastern and western basement of the Rhodes Hydrobiological Station / ELKETHE and their transformation into a new laboratory for the treatment of sea turtles. Currently, the floor of the lofts consists of steel sheeting, which is so corroded that it needs immediate replacement. In addition, the metal beams, which form the supporting structure of the beds, are locally corroded and should be cleaned and insulated with appropriate anti-corrosive paints. Finally, the perimeter railing has also suffered significant corrosion, to the extent that it is considered dangerous and should be replaced in its entirety.
– The creation of a new enclosed laboratory space for experimental aquarium science at the YSR/ELKETHE, with an area of 32 m^2, under the loft of the eastern basement.
– The reconfiguration of the existing chemistry room on the western ground floor of the HSSR/ELRF to accommodate the new sediment analysis laboratory; currently, the chemistry room is not sufficiently isolated from the rest of the ground floor and public areas of the station, which makes it difficult to operate.
Deliverables
P1.1: Established single underground laboratory space for experimental aquarium science at the HEP/ELKETHE, area
P1.2: Landscaped elevated areas for the care and accommodation of sea turtles in the HSSR / Hellenic Marine Research Centre, with a total area of 67 m^2
P1.3: Single ground floor laboratory space for sedimentological analyses at the HSSR/HLRF, with a total area of 30 m^2

Supply and installation of electronic and other equipment for disabled access to the HSSR/ELKEΘE (PEP2)
The building of the RS Rhodes / ELKETHE was constructed in the 1930s and its internal and external configuration does not facilitate access for disabled people to all its areas; moreover, its classification as a historic – listed building by the Ephorate of Modern Monuments requires careful evaluation and selection of external and internal additions and interventions so as not to alter its physiognomy. The upgrading of the infrastructure, research – innovation and the dissemination of its results to the scientific community and the general public, are key objectives of the daily activities of the Rhodes Regional Authority and are served by the implementation of the other PIs of the proposed Act. Of equal importance is the implementation of this WP, however, because by providing access for people with disabilities (researchers, students, etc.) to the research and educational facilities of the HSS/ROS/ROSR, the exclusion of a sensitive social group is removed.
Due to the layout of the YSSR/ELTR, the solution of an external vertical access gate has been chosen for the problem of external access; as regards access for disabled persons internally in the northern basement of the building, the solution of a fixed ramp is preferred.
Deliverables
P2.1: External access for disabled persons (vertical platform lift) in the building of the YSSR/ELKETHE
P2.2: Internal ramp-type access for disabled persons in the basement of the YSSR/ELKETHE building
